People applying to migrate to Australia - Skills Assessment for Residence Visa
TRA is a skills assessing authority for the Australian Government General Skilled Migration (GSM) program. TRA assesses over 170 occupations; most of these are trade occupations. Skills assessments are needed to apply to the Australian Department of Immigration and Citizenship (DIAC) for a residence visa for a skilled migrant. TRA play no role in the issuing of visas or the allocation of points for migration purposes.
Skilled Worker Program
Applicants seeking a skills assessment for a residence visa:
- under the General Skilled Migration program from outside Australia; or
- under the General Skilled Migration program from within Australia but do not hold an Australian qualification based on studies undertaken in Australia; or
- under employer sponsored arrangement
are required to be assessed under the Skilled Worker Program to meet the Australian Department of Immigration and Citizenship (DIAC) skills assessment requirements for a permanent residence visa.
TRA will assess your occupation by comparing your training and employment experience with the requirements of our Skilled Worker Program Assessment Criteria (SWPAC). The SWPAC has four Skill Pathways. For your application to be successful, your evidence must show that your training and employment experience meets one of these Skill Pathways.
If you are applying for a visa under the General Skilled Migration program, and are a resident of India, Sri Lanka, the United Kingdom, South Africa or the Philippines, you need to contact the VETASSESS Consortium if you want a skills assessment for the following trades: general electrician, general plumber, refrigeration and air-conditioning mechanic, motor mechanic, carpenter and joiner, carpenter, joiner, electrical powerline tradesperson, cable jointer, or bricklayer; and supervisory occupations relating to these trades. More information can be found at the VETASSESS Consortium website.
